Sunday News

I'll put the serious news first.

* AK Hangal has passed away.

There are only a few old timer left kicking around... Dilip Kumar, Pran... that generation will be gone soon.

* Hrithik Roshan has nothing booked post Krrish 3.

* Ek Tha Tiger doesn't quite hit the 200 Crore Club but it comes close.

* Speaking of... The Economic Times unpacks the 100 Crore Club in the snottiest tone I've read since Passion For Cinema shut down.

Of course, the earnings of a blockbuster like Bodyguard or Ready are phenomenal because unlike Hollywood movies, audiences seem to be indifferent to the quality of a Hindi film. Amitabh Bachchan's Mard was one of the biggest hits of 1985; viewers then seemed to have pardoned scenes that had a tiger returning a namaste to the hero's mother and the hero blowing up an army tank with a couple of grenades.

Oh, well, okay then. It's great to know Hollywood movies that did really well like Big Momma's House 2 and Paul Blart Mall Cop are so much more intelligent than anything coming out of Mumbai because Hollywood audiences chose on quality.

Seriously, why won't this "Hollywood is better" argument just die already? Both industries produce their fair share of inane films that do well at the box office.

* Meet the man writing the script for Bloody Veer.

Instead of just trying to copy from the West, I am looking through Indian mythology and culture to reinvent the concept of vampire so that it works in India," Prashant said.
It was rumoured that Ranbir Kapoor would be playing the lead in the film, but Prashant said the casting process is yet to begin.

* Shiney Ahuja keeps turning up like a bad penny. He gives a delusional interview:

"Irrespective of what has been sometimes reported or said, whenever I have gone amongst people, their reactions have been pretty much the same that was earlier. Now, in fact, there is a relationship that they feel they have with me," Shiney told IANS in a candid interview.

So... everybody knew you were a dick then but now we have confirmation that you're a dick?

Re ETT -- I really hate websites which deliberately confuse between worldwide and India box office collections, and also between gross and net.

But my main question to you is why you have written this news as if ETT has finished its run at the theater? The film has only been out for 12 days, for pete's sake! Let's see where it ends up when it finishes its run. Right now its total to date is between ~ 143cr to 168 crore, depending on whom you want to believe. What is much more interesting to me is why there is such a huge discrepancy between the collections reported by Taran Adarsh and Komal Nahta on the one hand (the go to trade analysts), and Box Office India (the go to website for people on the net). Usually they more or less agree, at least to within a crore or so, but this kind of 14-15 crore difference is something I haven't seen before. And it keeps growing day by day. What is even more interesting is that BOI has not given daily totals for some days, but came up with a weekly total for the first week.

At any rate, ETT has already given the highest distributor share in the history of Hindi cinema, and is currently the second highest grossing Hindi film ever. Whether it gets close to, equals, or beats the highest grosser to date (3 Idiots) still remains to be seen for a few more weeks.

Note from Filmi Girl:

I love Bollywood - and all the ridiculous things that happen in Bollywood - but it doesn't mean that I can't occasionally make fun of various celebrities and films.

If you don't like my sense of humor, please just move on by - Trolls are not appreciated and nasty comments will be deleted.
