Lies, Damn Lies, and Statistics!

No, I'm just kidding! Statistics don't lie - it's all in how we interpret them.

I found this interesting post summing up the 2000s over at IBOS.

Here are some numbers! (You can find the original numbers and extended lists over at the IBSO post!)

(Sorry, no gossip this morning because I have a stupidly early doctor's appointment... boo! I'll try to catch you up on some Veer news tonight.)

The top 5 male earners in Bollywood by average net per film (in crore Rs.):

#1 Aamir Khan (56.3)

#2 Hrithik Roshan (31.5)

#3 Shahrukh Khan (29.3)

#4 Akshay Kumar (21.7)

#5 Abhishek Bachchan (21.3)

But a different list reveals itself when you look at the top 5 male earners by TOTAL net (in crore Rs.):

#1 Akshay Kumar (891.1)

#2 Abhishek Bachchan (682.7)

#3 Amitabh Bachchan (680.6)

#4 Shahrukh Khan (645.3)

#5 Sanjay Dutt (542.2)

Akshay's total earnings far outstrip the small number of mega-hits that Aamir Khan had. (He's actually #6 on the list with about 500 crore total.)

So, if you are a business person, do you put all your eggs in one basket - so to speak - and finance one massive Aamir Khan film, knowing that chances are good that you will get a single big payoff or do you finance 5 smaller Akshay Kumar films, where each might not be a giant hit but taken together, you will get a very good return?

The actresses are interesting, too!

Here are the top 5 actresses by average net per film (in crore Rs.):

#1 Katrina Kaif (36)

#2 Vidya Balan (29)

#3 Kareena Kapoor (22)

#4 Aishwarya Rai (20)

#5 Lara Dutta (20)

My first thought in looking at this list was, "How on earth did Vidya Balan get to the number 2 slot," and my second was, "Has Lara Dutta even been in any hits?" I think Vidya hits up there because she only has a small number of releases and was in a couple of Akshay Kumar films in 2007, when he was Kin(n)g of the Box Office. Lara Dutta, on the other hand, I have no idea. She had Partner but I think in her case it's Akshay Kumar syndrome of just being in a bunch of smaller successful films.

And here are the top 5 actress by TOTAL net (in crore Rs.):

#1 Kareena Kapoor (682)

#2 Katrina Kaif (580)

#3 Priyanka Chopra (471)

#4 Aishwarya Rai (466)

#5 Bipasha Basu (460)

Like the actors, this reveals a different set of numbers, even if Vidya (#10) and Lara (#8) are a little further down than their counterparts on the actors list. What's interesting here is that Kareena has almost twice the number of releases that Katrina does, which is why Katrina's per film number is so high. But Katrina and Kareena are head and shoulders above the rest of the pack. Priyanka, Aish, Bips, and Rani (#6) are all clustered around the mid 400s, there is a drop to Preity in the 300s and then the list tails off into the 200s with Lara at around 250 and Vidya at 200.

And, finally, here are the top directors with TOTAL gross/net by film (in crore Rs.):

#1 Priyadarshan (310/22)

#2 Rajkumar Hirani (221/74)

#3 David Dhawan (207/15)

#4 Anees Bazmee (202/40)

#5 Rakesh Roshan (168/42)

So, in short, to get the most bang for your buck, you want to finance a ton of small films by Priyadarshan, starring Akshay and Kareena. But if you want to go out with one mega-hit, finance a film by Rajkumar Hirani starring Aamir Khan and Katrina Kaif.

Interesting that Hrithik doesn't appear in the top 5 of the second actors' list, isn't it?

I find it very telling on the actor side of things that Ajay Devgan ranks #13 on the average net per film list but #7 on the total net generated list.

If I were a business person looking to invest, I'd take the total net generated and divide it by the number of films appeared in. Then I'd be tempted to back the person who had the highest average per film generated. Yes, that gives an advantage to people like Aamir Khan who only had 9 releases in the whole decade; however, I may also look to see how many of the films were considered successes and how many were considered flops.

If an actor has lots and lots of flops and only a handful of successes, then I'm not going to be as interested. But if he has a 50/50 record, then I might take a chance. If he has a record that's better than 50/50, then I'll be even more tempted.

As you said, it's all in how you look at it. :)

Is this all from IBOS? Its an unreliable source/site. The Bollywood trade site most refered to is (BOI)

IBOS is the same site that said Kareena Kapoor only started winning awards (for Jab We Met) because she started dating MUSLIM Saif Ali Khan. It has all sorts of conspiracy theory/anti-Islam vitriol and is very VERY biased. I know some of the numbers might be true, but I'm sure they tweak it to their liking. :/

For example, they love the Bachchans, because they're OMG HINDU, and Kareena beats Katrina in the adjusted while Akshay beats Aamir in the adjusted, again taking out the two successful Muslim actors. Not trying to start up any religious wars here or anything, but this is HONESTLY what IBOS does.

@filmizest @anita - I was just looking at the numbers. All interpretation is mine. :)

I just think it's an interesting compare/contrast with money made per film vs. total generated for the decade. There are no "adjusted" numbers, just the straight total amount made versus amount per film.

Two different ways of looking at things...

I'll see if I can find similar numbers on BOI to compare. I have no agendas - I just happened to stumble across this and thought it was interesting.

Oh no, I obviously trust your interpreting, just not sure about IBOS' numbers, you know? :)

The IBOS site makes up its BO numbers. It is very very unreliable, not to mention it is one of the most biased Bachchan fansites out there. Sorry you spent so much time analyzing their fictitious numbers LOL

Abhishekh earns more than Shahrukh Khan why? For being Big B's son? So unfair.

Sanjay Dutt is in top 5 the bracket?? This is from Munnabhai, right? I don't get the bit about Abhi and Lara, as well. I mean..I love Abhi, but him as a higher earner than SRK? Did I miss something? ^^;

All Indian box office sites have biases. IBOS is pro-Bachchan, pro-Akshay and pro-Hrithik but BoxOfficeIndia (BOI) is also notoriously pro-Muslim actors (Khans). In BOI’s eyes most movies with non-Muslim actors are semi-hits, average, flops or disasters and rarely superhits or blockbusters. A good example is Paa which all trade experts acknowledge as a hit movie especially considering its low cost but BOI begrudgingly lists it as a semi-hit. In contrast, a Muslim actor movie is rarely listed as a flop or disaster even when it is one.

Box office reporting in India is not reliable and very subjective since the numbers are not verified by any official tracking method unlike in the West.
