I wait all YEAR to watch this song... I've never seen Kalicharan but I have seen this song more times than I can count. Helen and Shotgun Sinha really did have some fantastic chemistry.

Now, be sure to keep an eye out for an extra special guest about 2 minutes in! You don't want to miss this gem.

I hope you enjoyed your little treats all through the Christmas season. I'll be taking tomorrow off but I'll be back on Monday with your Christmas present.

2011 ADVENT DAY 15

Another treat from my top secret vault... A POST ABOUT PADMA KHANNA! I had to do some editing of youtube links because, unfortunately or fortunately, video on youtube doesn't live forever.

One addition I found...

Padma Khanna today!

Oh, Padma Khanna… I know nothing about your personal life except what I’ve found on the Internet – you were born March 10, 1940. That’s it.

Padma Khanna was not a great dancer or actress. She did mostly item numbers and the occasional vamp role. She has not found critical acclaim late in life like Aruna Irani or Helen. In fact, I didn’t even care for her when I first started watching the older Bollywood movies. She can be kind of awkward and is often seen spilling out of whatever costume they’ve poured her into – but you know what? Over the years, Padma Khanna has really grown on me.

Watching Jalte Badan over the weekend really sealed the deal. I love her trademark character – the woman who vamps because she can and nobody has told her not to but then she learns the meaning of life and dies from a gunshot wound after first killing a bunch of mobsters with her gun!

Even when wiggling her hips and making her dil go dhak dhak, Padma was never overtly sexy like Bindu or Rekha. She was more like Helen – an innocent kind of fun-filled dancing. It wasn’t her fault if you couldn’t resist those hips…

Here are 9 fun Padma Khanna Cabaret Songs!

#9 “Aag Se Aag Bujha Le” from Jalte Badan

What do you mean that every “pot party” doesn’t come with Padma Khanna descending from the ceiling in a gilded cage? There isn’t enough of her in this song…

#8 “Pyaar Tujhe Aisa” from Kashmakash

This one is classic Padma – awkward dance moves and an ill-fitting silver mini-skirt and bodysuit combined with great enthusiasm! Watch for bonus Ranjeet (HOT!) and Ramesh Deo (ALSO HOT!)!

#7 “Nodidheya ee” from Operation Diamond Racket

Padma Khanna must have done a ton of regional cinema – she’s got a great figure for Southern movies. I need this Kannada movie! Karate, dragons, what more do I need?

#6 “Pyar Hai Gunah” from Paapi

With a set stolen from Teesri Manzil and a melody from Led Zepplin, Padma is pretty rocking in this one!

#5 “Husn Ke Lakh Rang” Johny Mera Naam

A sensible knee-length skirt and some black go go boots are the perfect seduction outfit! I love when she does high-kicks using the rifle to prop herself up!

#4 “Hone Lagi Hai Raat Jawan” from Naina

Aw! Padma is all traditional in this one – check out the lime green outfit! Shashi doesn’t quite know what to make of everything…

#3 “Aa Janne Jaa” from Paapi

Watch her wiggle her hips in this Hawaiian-themed cabaret song!

(“I’m sorry you find me so irresistible…”)

#2 “Kaanp Rahi Main" from Joshila

She is looking very good in this one! I love the red sparkly leotard…

#1 “Aapka Sarkaar Kya Kuch” from Hera Pheri

I love this movie and I love this song! The brass band that follows her around is my favorite part!

2011 ADVENT DAY 14

Your treat today... a rare live performance from Ajay Devgn!! This is from the Airtel Superstar Awards, November 2011.

I kind of love that Shahrukh Khan is the only person who knows how to be a proper audience on camera. There is some epic bitchface in that crowd. Come on, yaar, just let Ajay Devgn do his thing! He was probably nervous!

A big Happy Birthday to DILIP KUMAR! Your treat today is photos from his birthday party! Everybody looks like they are having fun... and you may see some familiar faces!

Isn't it like looking at a family album? I guess that means I've been watching too many films...

Anyways, I wish another healthy and happy year for Dilip-Sir.

2011 ADVENT DAY 12

Just proving what a strong year it's been for films, I had almost forgotten how much I enjoyed Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara until "Senorita" came up on shuffle mode on iTunes.

Picking a top five this year is going to be tough... in the meantime, enjoy!

Your treat today is from deep in my archives! After I saw murder-mystery movie Gumnaam, which I really enjoyed, I decided to have some fun with it and focus on the far more interesting parallel narrative of Pran and Helen's characters. It's not very often that Pran gets a love story!

(Also, I really recommend checking out this blog, specifically this post
if would you like to add more Helen into your life.)

On to the show!

Some people may be under the illusion that Gumnaam is a murder mystery starring Manoj Kumar and Nanada - INCORRECT! Gumnaam is the tragic love story of Kitty and Rake, two crazy kids who just wanted to go on a nice vacation.

Rake, a trial lawyer with a healthy appetite for booze and a fashionable skunk stripe in his hair, and Kitty, a secretary with a hidden talent for dancing and love of swimming, have their fateful meeting at a masked ball. They both win a FREE vacation to an exotic location out of the country in a raffle. Aren't they lucky?!

Of course, nothing can ever go smoothly in the opening minutes of a film. Rake and Kitty's plane strands them in a mysterious (and seemingly empty) land. OH NO!

Rake is wary. Smart man.

He bonds with Kitty right away - trying to get her to share in his interests.

And offering his protection from the evil forces at work in the area.

They realize they share an affinity for jaunty robes and fall in love!

She really likes this alcoholic!

An innocent swim outing turns into some serious flirting!

She agrees that since he took an interest in swimming, she will try some booze.

Now they have TWO shared interests and decide to get married as soon as the vacation ends and they return to Bombay.

Then TRAGEDY strikes! Kitty is murdered and poor Rake is the one to find her body. He goes crazy with grief.

He goes so crazy that his metaphorical tiger manifests itself outside.....

NAHIN!!!!!!!! And here ends their tragic tale. The poor kids never stood a chance. *sniff*

Lustig lustig tra-la-la-la-laaa~
Bald ist Nikolausabend da! Bald ist Nikolausabend da!

Happy St. Nicholas Day, everyone!

When I was a little girl, on the evening of December 5th, we would leave a single boot out by the front door and on the morning of the 6th we would wake up to a shoe filled with chocolates, small toys, yummy clementine oranges, and a handwritten note in German from my dad St. Nicholas himself.

Today always brings back fond memories for me of sticky fingers and yummy chocolate before school.

And now your present! If you read gossip today, you saw the article about Sarbjit Singh Chadha, the Delhi Businessman who moonlights as a singer of Japanese enka songs... well, here he is last year at the Namaste Tokyo festival.

What a cool guy! I want to meet him!

I'll always remember Dev Anand best as the impossibly suave hero of his brother Goldie's ingenious masala films of the 60s. Jewel Thief and Johnny Mera Naam are the pillars of my appreciation for Dev.

With that in mind, one of my favorite Dev Anand picturizations is your present today!

"Dil Pukare Aa Re Aa Re" from Jewel Thief!

The song was shot in gorgeous Nepal, which Dev always had a soft spot for, and picturized on Dev and his equally luscious co-star Vyjayanthimala, who is dressed in a dream of a sari covered in white puffs - like the heads of dandelions ready to blow away. Dev, as always, is looking dashing in a cardigan and scarf.

So, dear readers, how do YOU best remember the Evergreen Hero?

Your present today is... a pretty doll to play with!

(And if anybody knows any other songs in which the dancer plays a doll, I'd be happy to add them to the list!)

From Dil Hain Tumhara, which is a terrible film, comes the haunting "Dil Laga Liya." Preity Zinta as a marionette with puppet master Jimmy Shergill as backup.

A drunken Rishi Kapoor manhandles mannequin Madhuri in "Jadu"... despite the peppy music, it has some really dark undertones, if you ask me.

And from Purab aur Paschim - the divine Saira Banu plays a ditzy memsaab marionette to Manoj Kumar's hearty desi marionette!

I love that she has completely ditched size zero... these curves don't lie.
