Now we have some media outlets and Bollywood celebrities coming out in support of Suraj (because nobody understands or is more qualified to talk about the pain a young actress is going through than Sanjay Gupta, Subhash Ghai, and Mahesh Bhatt) and others continuing to paint him as a monster. I suppose it depends on who has been paid off by the Pancholis and their backers and who prefers the "clicks" generated from Suraj's Tales of Horror. And in between, Jiah's mother is getting painted as a raving looney. You know, I think we could all cut Rabiya some slack considering her daughter just committed suicide and is having her life choices dissected in the nation's headlines.
At the very least, we can all be grateful that Madhur Bandar-car, Friend Of Spielberg, hasn't announced a "feminist" film on the subject... yet.
(For some perspective, read Lakshmi Chaudhry.)
And the only other story today is the Chennai Express trailer and how awful it looks. The USP of the film appears to be a watered down version of SRK's Raj/Rahul character dropped into a watered down version of a Rohit Shetty film where he meets Deepika putting on a bad Tamil accent. To quote one Shekhar Subramaniam: Ai yooooo~.
How is something so openly mocking of southern India acceptable in 2013? And who is this film aimed at? Do the mass audiences across northern India want to see their southern brothers being made fun of like this? Or are they betting that the diaspora wants to laugh at the rubes back home in Tamil Nadu? Or are we just supposed to swoon over Raj/Rahul and forget everything else? As an outsider, the whole thing just feels uncomfortable. I like Tamil films. A lot. What is Shahrukh's weird obsession with making fun of Tamil Nadu? All I can think is that at school there was a really super-cool Tamil kid and Shahrukh resented him so much that now that he can make whatever films he wants, he insists on lampooning Tamils in every single one just to get back at a guy from 40 years ago.
On top of everything else, the trailer just feels tired. The car stunts seem tired; Raj/Rahul seems tired; the soundtrack seems to have been salvaged from Himesh Reshemmiya's waste bin. I love Rohit Shetty's comedy but his weak points have always been a) song picturizations and b) romance. That these are also SRK's strongest suits should have been a match made in heaven but instead it looks like the pair have brought out the worst in each other.
It is possible that this is just a terrible trailer and the film itself is going to be fresh and full of life... but I'm not holding my breath.
(I will reserve some breath for LOLing at the comments underneath the trailer from SRK fans defending it from haters. To quote "Courageous Buddy" : Bloody hater this is not ur place...go and cry somewhere else!...SRK rocks so as his Fans! \m/
