Thursday Post: Just one puff...

A non-fashion Cannes update! Remakes of Rambo and the Expendables among others, have been announced. How many signs of the Apocalypse have there been this week already? Does this make seven?

“We believe by officially remaking these titles we can maximize the fan following these titles have enjoyed over the years as they will surely be record breaking box-office draws when remade for Indian audiences,” [Samir Gupta of WaterFront Films (part of Cinema Capital Venture Fund)] said.

Why? WHY?! Not that the story of Rambo wouldn't make a good foundation of a masala film but who is the audience for a remake like this? Shouldn't they be looking for "adaptation" rather than "remake"?

Shabana Azmi doesn't like the lyrics to "Ishq Ki Maa Ki."

Simi Garewal rambles on about rape and Bollywood.

"Crass lyrics, voyeuristic camera angles, fragmented images of heaving breasts, swivelling navels, [and] swinging hips rob women of autonomy,’ she said. ‘So much easier to blame than to reflect and share part of the blame. All sections of society including films need to analyse how we are part culpable."

I think the conflation of rape, presentation of sexuality/sensuality in the mass media, and the objectification of women in mass media is not helpful and muddles the discussion of how to get women to have an equal voice and equal representation in society. I'm not picking on Simi or Shabana or on India. We have these troubles in America, too. All the media talking heads and cultural scolds want to blame the Internet or pornography or Chris Brown or whatever as if there is a direct line from men viewing boobs on a screen to men going out and violently assaulting women. But rape and violence against women are not about sex, the root is power and nobody wants to talk about that. Men feeling their god-given masculine power is being taken away from them by uppity women and grow resentful. Poor men, men from traditionally oppressed minority groups seeing the glitz and wealth and toned bodies of Hollywood on the magazines in the checkout line in Walmart, just out of reach. One lottery ticket away. Resentful. Left behind. Why don't I have that instead of this?

Can we please stop bickering over lyrics and the aesthetics of ass shots and start talking about things that actually matter?

Sanjay Dutt has surrendered and will be going to prison.

It's time for an IPL scandal! Shilpa Shetty's Rajasthan Royals are being investigated for match fixing.

----

How about some Meera news? Blah, blah, blah... she's causing trouble by acting pricy but this caught my eye:

According to gossipmonger, Meera was supposed to contest the general elections in Pakistan against Imran Khan this year.

Now, why wasn't THIS being mentioned in all the coverage of Pakistan's elections?

----

Good news for film fans, those disgusting anti-smoking ads that play before every film - you know where the guy who took one puff of a cigarette one time is now dying from throat cancer - are going to be replaced with something by RAJ & DK!

----

Manisha Koirala to make a filmi comeback? The lovely lady is now cancer free and ready to start working again. Congratulations, Manisha!!

And an update from Ameesha Patel's fantasy world where she is a massive star and successful film heroine.

When asked about her busy schedule nowadays Ameesha states, “I hope my critics read this. There are two ways to look at my career. One way is to see Ameesha still trying to get back and desperate. But the positive way of seeing it is Ameesha who was busy focussing on her personal issues or relationship is back in business with a bang, whether it’s doing a special appearance in Race 2 or my strong lead character with Neil in Shortcut Romeo or with my favourite actor Sunny Deol in Bhaiyyaji Superhit which also goes on floors in August or wearing the producer’s hat for my own home production Desi Magic. So I guess it’s how one takes it.”

Shahrukh Khan wears fedora. News at 11.

MADHURI! If nothing else, I hope this means we'll be seeing her at all the awards shows next year.

Re IPL - as I've just been instructed by Twitter friends, the scandal isn't about "match fixing", but "spot fixing" -- fixing the play of individual balls thrown. Sure, if you fix every ball, then you're effectively fixing the match, but if you only fix some of them, it "may or may not have an effect on the outcome of the match" according to TOI. :)

16 Blocks would be an interesting desi film-burntout cop has to escort pettty criminal/witness against bigwig to a grand jury hearing, and fight all kinds of people in the process.

Expendables is way more fun as a casting game than as a movie, in any language.

Note from Filmi Girl:

I love Bollywood - and all the ridiculous things that happen in Bollywood - but it doesn't mean that I can't occasionally make fun of various celebrities and films.

If you don't like my sense of humor, please just move on by - Trolls are not appreciated and nasty comments will be deleted.
