Shirish Kunder has become the Joker of Bollywood. He’s a talented filmmaker but has somehow managed to turn the media, the public, the industrywallahs, and the critics against him. Is it his surly media persona? His penchant for bickering with Bollywood’s beloved King Khan? His dedication to a singular, singularly loopy vision? Some sort of odd bias against a guy who would marry an older, more successful woman? Who can say. But it’s too bad his negative image has become so large because it means that Joker will never get a fair viewing.
People love to pile on flop films and they can pile on all they want on other sites but Filmi Girl is going to proudly wave her flag in support of Joker, as she has for numerous other flop films. Joker is delightful. Yes, it suffers a bit from some some severe cuts to the story and, yes, you can see the remnants of the 3D shooting - which would have been amazing if he’d been able to complete it - but even with those hurdles, it manages to be a charming little film about a strange little village.
Once upon a time...

"Ishq Ki Dafli Baje"
I have to admit that I've been inexplicably charmed by the songs for Kamaal Dhamaal Malamaal.
There's nothing groundbreaking or "cool" about the picturizations but Shreyas is just so charming! I feel a simple happiness watching them, a feeling missing when I saw (for example) this mess from Ishkq in Paris, the definition of TRYING TOO HARD.
And PS I just found out my theater is getting Joker AND Mugamoodi!! *head explodes* Do I have time to make two movies this weekend?! WHAT TO DO? I need to see both!!!

The Disco Song
*dances* I have a feeling this is going to be super fun on the big screen! I love Alia's red dress. I WANT ONE! (Is Karan going to give us a shopping guide?)
I'll be the first person to admit that I was really wary of Student of the Year when I first heard about it.
Unlike a lot of you, I was never a huge fan of Karan Johar's films. Don't get me wrong - I liked Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham but I didn't love them. And I don't think I could tell you exactly why. Is it the fetishization of Shahrukh (a running theme through all of KJo's work)? Or maybe it's just the depiction of romantic love as the most important thing in the universe (besides a nice wardrobe)?

News Hiatus
Hi friends! September is looking to be an extremely busy month for me... for a variety of reasons. I enjoy finding news for you everyday but I have a lot on my plate and something had to go. I'm only one woman, after all! Even if a very dedicated one.
I'll still be doing reviews and posting things as I find them so do check back. After all, Joker is coming out and you know I wouldn't miss writing about THAT for the world!
In the meantime, be sure to check out Get Filmy, who will give you a good dose of snark with your news.
Hopefully, things will settle down soon.

Ek Tha Tiger...
When you’ve been waiting for a movie as long as I’ve been waiting for Ek Tha Tiger there is the very real danger of being disappointed. Sky high expectations are not my preferred viewing partner at the movies but I put my trust in Kabir Khan and he rewarded me with an action packed spy flick! Ek Tha Tiger, the third of Kabir’s Pakistan Trilogy, is much more subdued masala than Salman has delivered recently - no item song, no comedy subplot, no villain.
And a word of warning to viewers - please try to see this without spoilers. It’s worth it. I’ll be as vague as possible in my review but I can’t really talk about the film without revealing something that is better discovered for yourself.
That thing is not the presence of Ranvir Shorey, who I am happy to tell you - spoiler free - is a welcome face!
Saturday News Post!
I am not excite at the negative reaction to "Halkat Jawani" in the comments on the last post. You guys! Yes, obviously, Madhur Bandar-car is a crap director and, yes, the choreography was dull but what grabbed me in that song was the sheer force of Kareena Kapoor.
"Halkat Jawani" isn't a great item song but it's like the perfect framing to see the essence of Kareena. What do you have left if you strip away the sets, costume, choreography, cinematography, etc. from an item? The actress in the center of it.
But I'm 100% positive Bandar-car didn't intend it like this and I'm 100% convinced Heroine is going to be another one of his hack jobs, only made viewable by Miss Bebo herself.
Anyways.
Ek Tha Tiger!! And nobody dare give me any spoilers or I will dishoom you myself.

Thursday Gossip!
Last night I happened to catch a very sweet film called Eclair about an orphan boy growing up during the tail end of World War II and the thing he loved most was sweets. I was sitting in a row of women and at the end of the film we were all sniffling. It's worth a watch if you enjoy sentimental films and it comes near you!

I'm being facetious, obviously. I may not like PC but this is ridiculous. Do people seriously have nothing better to write about?
Moving on...

100 Crore Club Member Badge No. 3: Dabangg
Because we need each other
We believe in one another
I know we're going to uncover
What's sleepin' in our soul
- “Acquiesce” by Oasis

Dabangg (2010)
[Just in time for bhai-fest 2012 aka Ek Tha Tiger! For the intro to the 100 Crore Club series click here. Then see Member Badge No. 1 and Member Badge No. 2.]
In Jody Hill’s 2006 film The Foot Fist Way,* small town taekwondo instructor Fred Simmons (Danny McBride) discovers that he isn’t master of his domain like he thought he was. The film sees him trying to figure out where he fits in the world. As he doubts his power at home, he sees his power fade in his dojo. Who can he control? What kind of man is he? Does he have it in him to be as big a douchebag as his idol Chuck “The Truck” Wallace (Ben Best)?
I happened to watch The Foot Fist Way the day before I sat down to rewatch Dabangg for this series on the 100 Crore Club and I couldn’t help but see a bit of Fred in Chulbul Pandey. Dabangg is a fun masala film but it’s also a film about a man learning how to read the lines of power and accepting his place within them. But where Foot Fist Way’s Fred is pushing back against an indifferent society, in Dabangg Chulbul is pushing back against his family. The world Chulbul must learn to navigate is the family unit.
