Tuesday Gossip!

Today in gossip - London folks may want to check the weather forecast because it's going to be RAINING KHAN; more Ra.1 promo shenanigans; absolutely the WORST interview I've ever read with Ranbir Kapoor; tantalizing images of Vidya doing her Dirty Picture; and MORE!

* O ho! London folks may be getting some Khan later this month - AAMIR Khan!

* SRK is shooting a new video for "Raftaarein." He is also threatening to release an "extended version" of the film... if it does well enough at the box office. Can the world handle that much Perm. One?

(And apparently the film isn't finished yet? That seems really strange to me. Haven't they been working on this for like forever? We've certainly been hearing about it FOREVER.)

* Race 2 is being pushed back, which may shake up the casting a bit. Understandably it seems Deepika is prioritizing Rana and Sonakshi is prioritizing Dabangg 2... and if Saifu isn't careful he could end up with some seriously C-list heroines. Paging Sophie Chaudhary... your lucky break is waiting on soundstage 2.

* It seems MAMI had an open forum on gay issues in film. Tarun Mansukhani defended Dostana.

Defending both -- his film and other stereotypical portrayals that could have been more honest -- he added: "If you scream from the rooftops in favour of gay issues, it will not work. Give it some time. Let us begin by having some fun with it. The time will come when the nation would open up and we'd see their true and sensitive representation in commercial cinema."

I actually agree with him. Let people normalize the idea; get used to it; and then slowly phase in more gay characters. That moment with John Abraham and Kirron Kher in Dostana where she accepts him as her "daughter-in-law" remains one of the most touching things I've seen.

* Hrithik is in hospital for a back injury.

* Shakti Kapoor gets down to some booty work on Bigg Boss 5.

* Trouble for Kerala cinemas.

* Aamir Khan is rumored to be interested in remaking 7aam Arivu with Shruti Haasan.

* Arjun Mathur - who I've been a fan of since Luck By Chance - is upset that his role was cut in My Friend Pinto.

* Read the world's most annoying interview with Ranbir Kapoor, in which the interviewer declines to ask him anything of interest and instead grills him on his girlfriends and tries to demand that Ranbir be BFF with Imran Khan.

Why do we keep hearing about your on/off friendship with Imran Khan?

I respect him, he is a nice, mature person, but we have never been the best of friends. We all know each other Prateik, Shahid, me, Imran. Trying to pit us against each other is exaggerated; it is fun because it drives us both to work hard.

That's a great answer, Ranbir, very diplomatic! But let me take a crack at it - we keep hearing about this on-off friendship that doesn't exist because JOURNALISTS LIKE YOU KEEP MAKING UP STORIES ABOUT IT. Save that stuff for your RPF where it belongs.

7aam Arivu song promo! I CAN'T WAIT! I am DEFINITELY choosing this over Ra.1 if I get the choice.

The making of the Dirty Picture poster! That Tusshar is a lucky, lucky man...

I have no idea what the voice over is saying here but it did get me pumped up for Panjaa! I have a feeling we'll be seeing some
dishoom-dishoom...

Hey FG,

Read the article about the theatres in Kerala.

Kerala can be called a paradox in the film crazy south! It has only about 120 screens in the whole state and this Diwali, we are going to see something unique! And I am not sure if it is a good thing.....

For probably the first time in Malayalam Cinema history, we will not have a Malayalam film release for Diwali! And this is purely becox of Ra.one, Ezham Arivu and Velayudham! All Malayalam films have been postponed to release at a later date....

Malayalam Cinema can never stand up to the budgets of Hindi/Tamil/Telugu films. It has always believed in making story oriented films...........

But the younger generation want the gradeur..... Malayalam cinema is passing through an interesting phase now with the older actors/technicians moving out slowly and are being replaced by new talent...

Also I am waiting for ezham Arivu! The film is gonna rock!

@OG Thank you for the comment!! I thought that was interesting... no Malayalam release for Diwali seems like a bad thing for the industry. Is it because of those "Big Three?!" I wonder...

Does the film industry restrict the number of screens the big budget movies can play on so that more Malayalam films can be seen? I think they do that in Karnataka. Maybe I am wrong?

Which are you going to see on Diwali? I really hope 7aam Arivu comes to my town!! I should do a poll, I think. :D

Hey FG,

Thanks for the reply!

It is definately becoz of the big three that no Malayalam films are releasing......as we have quite a few lined up for release actually....

The Malayalam industry does not restrict the number of screens that "other" films can be screened in......It goes against what AMMA (Malayalam film union) believes in.....

And secondly the multiplex culture has never truely caught on in Kerala. A lot of it becoz of socialism in the state. Even if the theatres try to hike ticket price, the people will "strike" and bring the prices down. When I left Kerala in 2005 to Mumbai for my job, I was shocked at the cost of tickets.

The best theatres in Kerala would not charge more than 30 Rs for a ticket, while in a multiplex in Mumbai, it can go upto 150/200 Rs.

The 2000's have been a bad time for the Malayalam Film Industry, while Tamil cinema has been a surge with new ideas etc. It can almost be called a Brain Drain. The talented people tend to go to TN/AP........

As a person who grew up watching the "Golden Age of Malayalam Cinema" i.e the 80's and 90's, I am not that happy with what is happening......

But in the last 2/3 years, new directors, actors have come in and made some real good cinema......and the way I see it, it will only get better!

And in answer to your last question, I will watch Ezham Arivu followed by Ra.one and Velayudham!

I live in the Bay Area now and all Indian films have a release here :)

I've heard that the US print of 7aam Arivu will have English subtitles, but I haven't found a list of theaters yet. I would choose it over Ra.One, as well. (And I love that you call it Perm.One. LOL!)

@OG That is very interesting!! Thank you for telling me. It is hard for us who speak English only to learn about these things.

I just saw my first Malayalam film which is Urumi and I really liked Santosh Sivan's work on it. It seemed very fresh. I was reading that some fans are resisting new heroes like Prithviraj because they like only the older ones like Mammooty. Do you think this is happening? I'll try to find the article about that again.

@myrna-nora Oooo! Well, if Raavanan did have subtitles then maybe 7aum Arivu will, too! We got the last Vikram film so it's possible we'll get this one, too.

Hey FG,

So you do follow up on your news eh? ROFL!

yeah, there is a mass anti-prithviraj movement going on Kerala at the moment, especially on the internet and youtube!

He is perceived to be arrogant and is outspoken about his views and that does not always go well with the public.

Another thing which recently happened was that he gave an interview with his wife (to John Brittas). It is on youtube and his wife made the cardinal sin of mocking SI actors........ never a good scenario when that happens :)

Mammootty still does a few good films. He still has it in him while Mohanlal has lost it completely!

I dont write a film blog but I had written an article about prithviraj reecntly before the release of urumi:
http://quintessentialhope.wordpress.com/2011/03/30/the-flawed-hero-%e2%80%9cprithviraj%e2%80%9d/

@myrna-nora,
I am pretty sure that it will have eng subs........

@OG Ha ha ha! Yes, I do! I'm a librarian in my real life and I like to know everything.

That was a GREAT piece on Prithviraj and very enlightening. :)

The official word from the US distributor of 7aam Arivu is that it will have English subs both in Tamil and Telugu and that he has screens in 32 states. I didn't get a list, but he said it'll be finalized by the end of the week. I'll post a link on Twitch when I get an update.

I suspected that it would be subbed because Red Giant's last Tamil release, Madmadhan Ambu has English subs as well.
