Thursday Gossip!

Today in gossip - assorted nonsense in which I'm annoyed at Ra.1 promotions (STILL! YES, I KNOW! I CANNOT WAIT FOR THIS FILM TO GO AWAY!) and excited for Saif Ali Khan's coronation!

And just a small note - I had somebody accuse me on Twitter last night of shoving my (uniformed) opinion down their throat. Do you know what the solution to that is? Don't follow me on Twitter and my opinion will not show up in your timeline. Done. Finito.

Do you know what is not helpful? Haranguing me with your opinion and refusing to drop the argument when I clearly have stated "let's agree to disagree."

Sigh. How I wish I could "unfollow" all the Ra.1 promotions... sadly, the Internet does not have such fancy filters.

* I may be an equality-loving socialist at heart but I have to admit that I'm kind of excited that Saif Ali Khan is going to be crowned the 10th Nawab of Pataudi! I hope there are LOTS of photos of the crowning and that Bebo and Sharmila are both there wearing amazing outfits.

The article goes on to say: Saif is not very comfortable with the idea of being crowned as Nawab of Pataudi but is doing so keeping in mind the sentiments of the people of Patuadi. Refusing to use the title of Nawab, Saif mentioned that he would prefer to remember his father as the last Nawab of Pataudi.

And, do you know what? I completely believe it. It will be interesting to see if Saif's new duties at home keep him away from Mumbai or if nothing will change except that we can no longer call him the Chhote Nawab... because he's the Nawab.

* Yup, there are a lot of remakes and sequels being made right now.

* I wasn't aware that Sridevi's upcoming film is being directed by Balki's wife but more power to her! I love seeing all the women stepping up to the director's chair! Sure, not all of them are going to be great but the more women who go into directing films, the less of an issue gender in filmmaking will become. And everybody will win if that happens.

* Maria del Mar Fernandez, who sang "Senorita" for ZNMD, would be such a great catch for my Outsider in Bollywood series! She's current in Delhi for a concert.

"They don`t know my face so much but when they ask me what I`m doing here and I tell them I`m the singer of `Senorita`, they get excited. Everyone knows the song here. It`s incredible," Fernandez told EFE.

* Mohanlal has signed a film with... Aamir Khan? And another with UTV, who are doing their first Malayalam film.

* Sigh. I don't like this new trend of actors singing songs for films. Let the people with the NICE voices do it. Playback singers exist for a reason and that reason is so that we don't have to hear people like John Abraham sing.

* We'd rather hear Rehka Bhardwaj, for example, whose MTV Unplugged will air on October 22nd.

* Censor Board troubles for Tollywood?

For another film, in which a popular South India hero, also known in Bollywood, was a hero, some words were blocked by the filmmaker when it was submitted for the censors. This was because the producer was sure the censors would not pass it anyway. However, subsequently when the film was released in the theatres, what would have been objectionable words, were incorporated and screened. The censors only got to know about these things later.

* Ayan Mukherjee will be shooting his next film in Kashmir with Ranbir and Dippy.

* Dookudu director Srinu Vytla picks Junior NTR over Salman Khan and Shruti Haasan takes Aamir Khan over Junior NTR. Somehow, I think Junior NTR gets the best deal out of this.

* Hrithik Roshan is laid up in bed for two weeks to rest his back. Well, he's had a lot of practice with Guzaarish!

* Prakhas Jha files an extortion case against some New York City based producers.

* Lessons in humility from Sanjay Dutt and David Dhawan.

Chalta hai, boss. Makes no difference if the film didn’t run. We’ll do another film together,” Dutt reportedly told the director. David confirmed that Dutt had indeed not taken the Rascals setback to heart. “Yes, Sanju called and had a long heart-to-heart with me. He is my real-life ‘Munnabhai’. ‘Mera dost hai, yaar!’ Whatever remorse I might have felt at the way Rascals finally turned out was washed away. There is no room for regret in our relationship. I started my career as a director with Sanju.”

Attention butthurt directors blaming everybody else for their failure to make a decent film - it's all on you. Make a good film and it's due will come, even if not at the box office immediately. I've gone beyond "annoyed" to "mega-annoyed" at all the Ra.1 promotional crap from Abhunav Sinha and Shahrukh Khan. I cannot WAIT to see what a giant pile of crap this film is going to be. Just because you're Shahrukh Khan, doesn't mean your film can't fail...

* Meanwhile Ram Gopal Varma puts in his two cents on Abhunav Sinha and says directors don't matter at all in the success of a film.

"The director of Tashan touted as yashraj ki aag is directing Dhoom 3 ..if Aamir makes evn hs dog a director I wl b 1st in queue fr a ticket," he tweeted.

Yeah, but Tashan has become a cult classic and it failed for different reasons than Cash did. Tashan was smart and backed by a great script - Cash was a pile of meaningless action sequences and T&A shots (and how ironic that the director of such a gem would take to trashing "DK Bhose" as classless when Shamita Shetty's giant fake boobs are apparently the epitome of class.)

* Oh, and B-town producers want a ban on Hindi dubbed English films... which is fair enough.

The director of Ra.1 is "Anubhav" Sinha. I couldn't figure out if you were trying to make a point by consistently referring to him as "Abhunav", or if it was just a genuine mistake, so I thought I'd point it out. (Regarding Cash, I've read elsewhere that it was released before the final edit was finished, because of difficulties or differences in the production. I was reminded of this when I keep seeing articles on how they're still struggling to finish all the post production work on Ra.1)

You think it's "fair" that Hindi filmmakers want to ban Hindi dubbed Hollywood films? Then what about Hindi films being dubbed into Tamil and Telugu? Shouldn't they be banned to be "fair" to the Telugu and Tamil industries?

@moimeme It was a genuine mistake!! Thanks for pointing that out. I'll try to be more careful. :) I tend to get tangled up with b, p, and h, n for some reason and spell check isn't helpful with Hindi names.

I only vaguely remember seeing the posters for Cash when it came out and then it vanished. From what I've read over the last couple of days, it looks like there were a few problems with the production. 1. Anubhav was having an affair with Shamita Shetty; 2. there was a change up in producers halfway through production; and 3. Ajay Devgn and Anubhav got into a tiff and Ajay wouldn't finish dubbing.

Does that sound about right? I'm sure Anubhav is great at setting up action shots but being a capable director also means being able to handle your lead actor and not getting into a fight that's so bad that he refuses to finish dubbing, you know?

At the end of the day, the most important part of directing is turning in a finished film and it seems like Mr. Sinha struggles with that...

To your second point, I know this isn't a popular opinion but I'm kind of protectionist when it comes to regional film industries. It's really not fair that big budget films should compete with local products - whether Malayalam, Hindi, Telugu, etc.

But then again, I have the luxury of being able to see films from all the industries if I want to... so, maybe I'm the one who isn't "fair." ;)

I could not have said it any better than you...I do not want Ra one to do blockbuster business because then all the film makers are going to go crazy and think they have nailed the secret to success...but they haven't!! Ra One should stop trying to act all Hollywood and talk about what they have to offer. It's not about special effects or hollywoood but about the story. I'm happy that Hindi films can now have a boast for computer graphics BUT not like this.
Sinha is NOT a good director either...the fact he is the director is just sad...Did Srk even watch cash?!?

Note from Filmi Girl:

I love Bollywood - and all the ridiculous things that happen in Bollywood - but it doesn't mean that I can't occasionally make fun of various celebrities and films.
