February 2011 Bollywood Releases Song Promos!

Welcome to 2011! The year started off with a bang with the No One Killed Jessica score by Amit Trivedi but here are some other song promos for upcoming films!

7 Khoon Maaf - music by Vishal Bhardwaj; picturizations through montage; why didn't anybody make Priyanka loose the thick glamour make-up?

"Bekaraan"

"Darling"

Tanu Weds Manu - music by Krsna (his debut film); it's a montage promo but the film looks like a blast! And is it me or does some of this footage look like it could be from the rumored "Kajra Mohabbat Wala" remake?

"Saadi Gali"

Patiala House - music by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy but with a heavy helping of my girl HARD KAUR; the editing is really well done on these.

"Rola Pe Gaya"

"Kyun Mein Jagoon" (I got a little choked up just watching the song... *sniff sniff*)

"Laungda Lashkara"

I'm sorry, the last video, when the woman says 'innit' I nearly lost my lunch...

It's just pathetic. There's no other word that truly captures this situation.

It's just a garbled mess of Western nonsensical 'hip' terms that don't actually mean anything even in the West - Language as Fashion Accessory - soon to be discarded but not before a quick buck has been made.

I guess, it's nothing new - no doubt there would have been some fellow in the sixties spewing over the inclusion of obvious references to The Beatles and Rock and/or Roll in Indian Cinema.

At least the first flick - 7 Khoon Maaf - looks like it might have had some thought put into it - and it's intriguing how the clips seem to completely miss the storyline which appears to be something along the lines of the Eighties Hollywood movie 'Black Widow'.

Anyway, that's my two cents

@yip Maybe I have become immune to the fashion accessory language - I watch a fair amount of East Asian media, too, and the Koreans and Japanese are particularly egregious offenders. :)

As for Bollywood, yes, it's become a staple - I wonder if it has something to do with the MTV-ization of Bollywood picturizations?

I thought that the "innit" might be an affectionate joking reference to the Bhangra Muffins - characters from the UK comedy series "Goodness Gracious Me" who were always trying to be cool by speaking in what they thought was "street" language (with frequent uses of "innit"). But that mght be because I think of them whenever I hear somone say that ....

That song from Tanu Weds Manu is not by Krsna. Saadi Gali a pretty old RDB song--Akshay Kumar even used it in an IIFA performance a few years ago.

@bombay talkies Krsna is the music director, so he assembled or arranged it or whatever. Music directors don't do that much actual composing these days...

Gotcha. It said "music by" so it sounded like someone was trying to pass off someone else's song as his own. I've gotten too used to songs being "Pritamized" I guess. ;)

@bombay talkies That was me being lazy - I should have said music director. ;)

Did you read that article about the "music factories" some of these guys run? Pretty crazy stuff - no wonder so many soundtracks are so terrible.

I did...that was disappointing but I guess not terribly surprising. I read an interview with Vishal and Shekhar from a few years ago where they indicated that they did something similar--they were working on a film where the director kept rejecting every idea they had, and by the the time the soundtrack was finished they had 50 or 60 songs written. They said they didn't write anything new for a year, they just kept using music they'd already written. I guess it's better than letting it go to waste.

(I'm totally going to spend the next hour-ish watching vids of Akki's awards show performances now. That IIFA bit with RDB was the highlight of that show I thought.) :)

Note from Filmi Girl:

I love Bollywood - and all the ridiculous things that happen in Bollywood - but it doesn't mean that I can't occasionally make fun of various celebrities and films.

If you don't like my sense of humor, please just move on by - Trolls are not appreciated and nasty comments will be deleted.
