Lifeu Ishtene or Diganth Gets A Haircut

1. Introduction

As you all know, I’ve been a fan of the Kannada language film industry since about 2008, when I happened to get invited to a press event for a
never-completed
Kannada language film called E-Preeti. I was charmed enough by the lead actor, a handsome young man named Diganth, to go and check out his previous film - superhit Mungaru Male and the rest is history. The honey-dipped melodrama of Mungaru Male was so affecting and the visuals so lush and the music so beautiful that I was hooked for good. And, well, you can read my boat load of Kannada film reviews.

Top 11 Top 11 Lists of 2011 #7

Counting down to 2012, I thought it would be fun to do my Top 11 Top 11 Lists of 2011!

List 11 - Top 11 Indian Film Songs According to Filmi Girl's iTunes

List 10 - Top 11 Scene Stealers of 2011

List 9 - Top 11 Films Filmi Girl Never Got To See

List 8 - Top 11 Things Filmi Girl Wants To Go Away in 2012

List Number 7...!

Along with yesterday, this is my only other negative list so if you aren't a fan of snark, maybe skip this one and check in tomorrow.

Okay, let the fireworks begin...

Top 11 Losers of 2011

[Alternate title: Filmi Girl hasn't been getting enough hate mail recently.]

#10 and #11 Dia Mirza and Zayed Khan

If you attended - or viewed - the IIFA awards, it was impossible to miss the promotions for Dia Mirza and Zayed Khan’s first home production Feature Length Shampoo Commercial Hrithik’s Brother-in-Law and Miss Asia Pacific 2001 Need Work Love Breakups Zindagi. Unfortunately for Zayed and Dia, the endless promotions didn’t stop the film from being a massive bomb.

On the one hand, I have to give massive props to Dia and Zayed for setting out to make their own film when they weren’t getting the type of offers they felt they deserved. Kudos for the initiative, guys! I mean that sincerely. However, on another, larger hand, it’s supremely pathetic to have put so much time and effort into something as supremely mediocre as Love Breakups Zindagi.

I’m not sure what was the most pathetic part of the whole Love Breakups Zindagi experience - that Zayed and Dia didn’t realize that they weren’t getting leading roles for a reason (i.e. acting ability) or that one of the best reviews for the film that resulted of their mediocre collaboration begins: Let’s forget about the love story between the two main characters of the film — Dia Mirza and Zayed Khan. That one is too predictable.”

That’s the kind of success you spell L.O.S.E.R. and hopefully the next time Dia and Zayed decided to use the money they earn from paid appearances to produce another film, they will be smart enough to not cast themselves.

List Number 8...!

Top 11 Things Filmi Girl Doesn't Want To See in 2012

[Alternate title: Filmi Girl is on par with Hollywood!]

#11 Imran Khan

No, this one is cool.

This one, too.

Yes. This one.

Is there a less essential hero right now than Imran Khan? Mere Brother Ki Dulhan was a Katrina Kaif film; Delhi Belly was an Aamir Khan film...

He just seems to sleepwalk through every single film he’s in, as if he had nothing better to do that day and just wandered on set. Maybe he’s bored by romantic comedies but nobody is forcing him to act in them.

I just get the feeling that Imran is in it for the paycheck at this point and I really have no desire to see his glazed over expression staring at me from yet another half-assed Yash Raj romantic-comedy. I’d almost rather see Neil Nitin Mukesh in some of these roles. At least Neil is trying, man.

Imran Khan with his fancy pedigree and mediocre performances is infinitely less exciting than young, bright talents with no pedigree like Ranveer Singh and Saqib Saleem but who keeps getting cast?

That’s right. Imran Khan.

He needs to get his bored self TFO my cinema screens in 2012.

And LIST NUMBER 9!

Top 11 Films I Never Got A Chance To See in 2011

[Alternate Title: People Need To Start Sending Me Screeners]

#11 Rockstar/Dirty Picture (Hindi)

Why I want to see them? Honestly, I’m not terribly anxious to see either one except to both join in the conversation surrounding the films and to see some amazing performances from two of my favorite Bollywood actors - Ranbir Kapoor and Vidya Balan. Rockstar and Dirty Picture belong to a genre of films gratingly nicknamed “Hindies” - films that take their visual and narrative cues from what we can call the Miramax style of filmmaking. It’s a style I don’t find all that engaging in English language films and one I find as equally un-engaging in Hindi language films but it seems to the way middlebrow Hindi films are headed (which explains a lot about the rest of my list, if you dare to check it out!)

Best of 2011 Mash Up from T-Series

Essentially, this is the greatest thing you will see ALL DAY!

Wednesday Gossip!

New Zealanders - Rahat Fateh Ali Khan will be coming to your neck of the woods in March. Don't miss him!

Now for some more good news for global film viewers... one of my most highly anticipated films of 2011 was Pawan Kumar's Kannada language film Lifeu Ishtene. Usually I would have to wait for DVD but the film has just been made available to watch ONLINE with ENGLISH SUBTITLES!!! Click here to check it out! Now I know what I'm doing tonight!

Pawan has also announced his new film titled Lucia.

If you are unfamiliar with Pawan Kumar, check out my review of Manasaare for which Pawan wrote the script and which also stars Diganth. He's one of the most interesting talents working in Sandalwood today, so do check out Lifeu Ishtene
!

NOW!!! I'm back at work today so today's Top 11 list will be posted this evening. Also, blog-related, I did a wonderful interview with one Mr. Omi Vaidya last night so keep an eye out for that, as well.

Here is List 10...

Top 11 Scene Stealers of 2011 According to Filmi Girl's Film Reviews

[Alternate title - Filmi Girl loves vamps, comedians, and villains way more than heroes and heroines.]

#11 Puja Gupta in F.A.L.T.U.

What I said then: Puja Gupta rocked my socks. The girl is adorable and completely charming.

What I remember now: Bollywood is full of model-beauty queens who want to break into films. The secret formula of luck and behind-the-scenes machinations that separates a potential Priyanka Chopra from a potential Sarah Jane is mysterious and has little to do with on-screen talent... if it did, Puja Gupta would be getting cast in better things than Jackky Bhagnani starrers.

Top 11 Top 11 Lists of 2011 #11

Counting down to 2012, I thought it would be fun to do my Top 11 Top 11 Lists of 2011! Here is number 11...

TOP 11 INDIAN FILM SONGS OF 2011... according to Filmi Girl's iTunes

One of the many features of Apples iTunes is a counter that tracks how many "plays" a song has gotten. Here are the top 11 film songs ranked in ascending order by how many times they were played by me this year.

11. "Neduvaali" from Osthe (Tamil)
Singer(s): Rahul Nambiar, Mahathi
Music Director: S. Thaman

Why I like it: The chorus. "Neduvaali" is a mid-tempo stomp along song that just explodes into this raucous chorus! The drums don't stop and neither do your feet stop tapping... "Neduvaali" is just a fun mash of horns, drums, and autotuned vocals.

Monday Gossip!

MERRY CHRISTMAS! I hope everybody celebrating had a nice day yesterday.

We spent a lazy day eating and followed by a Christmas viewing of that classic Christmas film - Die Hard.

To quote the man himself: "Now I have a machine gun. Ho-Ho-Ho."

Now onto gossip!

Rajapattai - THE PATH OF VIKRAM!

[Clearly, this is an intellectual film... heh.]

As much as I complained about Ra.One, you should know that I had been fully planning on seeing Don 2 this weekend until I had not one or two but three people tell me in no uncertain terms that I was going to hate it. I believed them and, luckily, my local theater has begun screening South Indian films and Vikram’s Rajapattai was playing, too. Do I subject myself to something I’ll probably find unpleasant or watch a film from one of my favorite actors? The answer was obvious - Rajapattai it was for me this weekend!

Saturday Gossip!

Today in gossip - assorted odds and ends! Prem Chopra! Also, two new trailers - one for Naanban and the other for the new Riteish-Genelia film.

Ekk Deewana Tha Music Launch!

Please enjoy some photos from the music launch! I'm looking forward to this one!

Friday Gossip!

I've been told in no uncertain terms that I will absolutely hate Don 2 so I'm not going to waste my time watching it. The word on the street is that the film is very much like one of those slick Hollywood action films that has thrills, plot twists, one-liners, babes, and a smirking hero in spades. However, much like those films, it's also lacking in character growth, character relationships, drama, songs, and humanity. For me, those are more important to enjoying a film than babes and plot twists, so I'll be passing on Don 2. I'll be curious to see how well it does at the box office because fairly or not, everybody is watching to see if King Khan is still relevant.

Reviews seem mostly mixed - a few panning it out right and a few singing it's praises but even Taran Adarsh only gave it a 3/5 so take from that what you will...

I think this review says it best:

With some 75% of the movie set in Berlin, and the whole of the second half devoted to the bank heist, Don 2 has none of the first film's complex storyline and multiple twists, only one musical number (and an item number, at that) and little to distinguish itself from any other globe-trotting blockbuster with a main character who's always three steps ahead of his enemies. As a pure movie, however, it's much better than the 2006 one — and way better than Khan's recent super-hero outing Ra.One र.वन.

Thursday, December 22, 2011

Thursday Gossip!

Not much happening in news items today... it seems like the calm before the Don 2 review/box office reporting orgy that will happen over the weekend. Word of mouth is pretty good so far, though. Although I have seen people saying that Priyanka's latest nose job is really distracting on the big screen. I can believe that.

Anyways... here's what I found:

Until then, char baj gaye lekin party abhi baki hai!!

Okay, gossip! Yes, I've seen Katrina's item teaser and... I hate it. Far from looking like the sexy Kat we all know and love, she looks like she's channeling Rakhi Sawant's face, wardrobe, and mannerisms. Ick. Katrina, sweetie, tell me who told you that you needed botox and fillers and I will fly over and personally deliver two tight slaps to the idiot.

Friday Gossip!

Today in gossip - A LOT OF BUTTHURT from a bunch of different sources. And Neil Nitin Mukesh pretends that he is still relevant and the media, apparently, decided to indulge him. Possibly because they were short of stories about Veena Malik.

Ladies VS Ricky Bahl or Me VS Yash Raj Films

"Kya karoon oh ladies... Main hoon aadat se majboor."
- Aadat Se Majboor, Ladies vs Ricky Bahl, 2011

As the title card flashed up on Ranveer Singh’s abs announcing the interval for Ladies Vs Ricky Bahl, I thought to myself, “I don’t understand why this has gotten such negative buzz.” And then the second half started and everything became clear. I don’t think I’m overstating things when I say that Ladies VS Ricky Bahl is half a genuinely charming film and half a supremely mediocre one.

Monday Gossip!

This is one of the most surreal things to have happened to me this week... Dilip Kumar is on Twitter. You can follow him @TheDilipKumar.

It looks like Osthi is doing well! That makes me happy! While it may not be a groundbreaking film, it was a heck of a lot of fun and I want everybody to go see Simbu dancing on the big screen!

As for the other movie out this weekend, I haven't written my review of Ladies vs Ricky Bahl yet but I must say that it reminded me very strongly of Bachna Ae Haseeno. Both those films had a charismatic lead actor, both films had strong supporting female casts, and both of those films had tedious romance track with an actress doing her best impression of a wooden plank. It's about two-thirds of a good film - essentially any scene that did not have Anushka Sharma sucking the life out of it. Since I know Anushka can bring it if she wants to, I suspect the problem here was either a) she was hungry or b) she wasn't getting along with Ranveer. Either seem plausible. The winners coming out of this film are Ranveer, who proves himself more than capable of anchoring a film, and Parineeti Chopra, who steals every scene she's in as bouncy Delhi-girl Dimpy.

Anyways, today in gossip... Shahrukh, gay rumors, Shiney Ahuja, and Emraan Hashmi... plus a Making Of video from upcoming Vettai!

Osthe: The Mass; Osthe: The Boss

"You’ve heard of Sivaji the Boss? He’s Osthe the Mass."

First things first - aside from sharing a basic plot, Osthe and Dabangg are nothing alike. Dabangg was more than a film; it was a middle-finger salute to the tales of Yash Raj rich that have dominated Hindi-language films over the last 10 years. Dabangg represented both a return of earthy masala filmmaking and of the bhai himself, Salman Khan. Chulbul Pandey, like Salman, had suffered some serious blows in his past but he was still standing - battered but triumphant.

As a remake of Dabangg, Osthi has none of that context. It can’t represent a return of masala because the Tamil film industry never stopped making those films in the first place. And unlike Chulbul Pandey, Osthe Velan isn’t a world-weary 40+ man. Played by the fresh-faced and extremely energetic Simbu, Osthe has a completely different energy from the weathered Chulbul. This doesn’t mean that Osthe is a worse film than Dabangg (far from it!) but it does mean that you can’t really compare them in a meaningful way. Osthe takes the basic plot of Dabangg and builds a real frame-busting entertainer out of it. Every masala element is stretched to maximum capacity... and then taken one step further. Osthe may not be a watershed film, like Dabangg, but it succeeded at blowing my socks off with its sheer entertainment value.

Sunday Gossip!

First things first... Osthi wasn't just The Mass, he was THE BOSS! I'll have my review up this morning!

They showed the trailer for the R. Madhavan/Arya film, which looks excellent, and for Short Term Shaadi Boring Title Movie which also looks even more dull when shown on the big screen... like, Break Ke Baad dull.

Ladies vs Ricky Bahl this afternoon!

And onto GOSSIP!

Saturday, December 10, 2011

Saturday Gossip!

Today in gossip - we continue to HAIL QUEEN VIDYA! Also, other things happened. Ladies vs Ricky Bahl opened to mixed reviews, none of which I've read because I won't be seeing the film until Sunday!

When I told my sister the basic plot - "con man conned by his own heart" - she said (correctly), "That's your favorite story!" So, I have a feeling I'll enjoy it.

I've been trying to fit together 2011 in film in my head, pulling out my top five films, and it's been really difficult... but Tanu Weds Manu, Urumi, and Mausam are three that have stuck with me.

Enough rambling, though - here are your links!

TGIF! Friday Gossip!

Another Friday, another new release! Who else is really excited for Ladies VS Ricky Bahl? It has been FAR TOO LONG since I've seen some Ranveer Singh on the big screen. Last year, when I saw Band Baaja Baarat in the theater, I was the only one in my screening. I bet THIS year that will be quite different...

Also, I'm very happy to see that our theater is getting Osthi! I'm not sure if it has subtitles or not but I'll try to go anyways. I've seen Dabangg so I should be able to follow the plot okay. I'm in it for the MASALA!

Today in gossip... IS 2011 THE YEAR OF THE WOMAN IN BOLLYWOOD?! Also, you know what rumor I'm insisting on posting...

Wednesday Gossip - The It's Raining Outside edition!

I feel like most news stories today were single quotes from a variety of actors, spun into entire articles: A bunch of people were sad about Dev Anand; Vidya Balan is happy about Dirty Picture (and journalists are all concerned about her shedding those 'excess' pounds); Ranbir Kapoor clarifies that he's not BFF with Imran and doesn't consider him competition; and Katrina Kaif uses Salman Khan's name. There. That's 99% of what was out there today... for the rest...

Tuesday, December 6, 2011

Tuesday Gossip!

Today in gossip - everybody is still really sad about Dev Anand and nobody not in the media cares about Tom Cruise (except where he is disrupting traffic, I'm sure.)

Monday, December 5, 2011

Monday Gossip!

Good morning, world! My apologies for missing yesterday but it was the day of my big test! I think I did well but I won't get my results for a few months. It feels good to challenge yourself every once in a while!

Okay! Today in gossip - the four names making the news sites buzz - Dev Anand, Dhanush, Silk Smitha, and Sunny Leone.

Today in gossip - Vidya, Vidya, VIDYA! Also, related, ladies over 30 are the new IT GIRLS!

Friday Gossip!

I'm a sad Filmi Girl today because, guess what... Dirty Picture will NOT be coming to my local cinema. Instead we're getting I Am Singh, a film that I have less than no interest in... and apparently nobody else does either. I'm wondering if there was a shortage of prints because the newsletter for my local theater that I got yesterday DID say we were getting the film but the actual schedule posted says we're not. AND a few other people in different cities like Edinburgh have said they won't be getting the film, either.

It seems odd that Ekta Kapoor would have such long and loud promotions for a film that wasn't getting a genuinely wide release so... yeah, I wonder if they had a shortage of prints....

Anyways... Dirty Picture seems set to do well this weekend! Congrats to the team!

In gossip today - a handful of interviews including a gloriously smarmy Ranveer Singh and somebody got engaged...

Wednesday Gossssip! Ek Me aur Ek You!

Just a note - I've been studying really hard for the JLPT (Japanese Language Proficiency Test) which is why I haven't been writing as many longer pieces recently. The test is on Sunday, so wish me luck studying for the next few days and hopefully I'll be back on a better writing schedule starting next week.

Today in gossip - Ek Main aur Ekk Tu trailer releases; catch up with Suniel Shetty, Malaika Arora Khan, and Akshay Kumar; some people are butthurt that Salman's staff disapproved when they rushed Salman's car; and some other odds and ends!

Tuesday, November 29, 2011

Tuesday Gossip!

Today in gossip... find out about Shahrukh's new facial hair, Kalki's international debut, who got an "A" certificate, and a new song was released from that film nobody cares about so every story on it is about how Ritesh and Genelia are getting married!

Sunday Gossip!

I had stayed away from all the reviews of Desi Boyz until I could see it for myself. Akshay Kumar films earn extremely dire reviews from critics for being low brow. (That those same critics are willing to forgive "main part" humor in other films is a topic for another time.) I was actually pleased to see that Desi Boyz earned a fair variety of reviews, with some enjoying it for what it was and others finding it unfunny or stupid.

Some reviewers were unable to see past the plot idea that Akshay and John become, essentially, hosts and their discomfort with the idea colored the rest of the film. Other reviewers found the evergreen heart of the film stale instead of refreshing. Both of these are fair points. If one is uncomfortable with the idea of John and Akshay entertaining female clients, one should probably not see the film. And, again, one should not go into Desi Boyz expecting a "realistic" film like Rockstar but I think that both of these things are made abundantly clear by the trailers.

If the trailers looked good to you, the film doesn't disappoint. If the trailers looked dumb, you probably won't like the film.

It's as simple as that.

One thing that caught my attention - there is a certain jingoistic moment in the second half that I pointed out in my review that most other critics pointed out, too. We all called attention to the fact that it was jarring but nobody else mentioned the zing delivered by Rajat Barmecha after the jingoistic moment that makes fun of the trope and intentionally deflates the moment.

Anyways, on to gossip!

Desi Boyz: Make Some NOISE!

Desi Boyz is that rare film that delivers much more than the trailer promises... which is a mark of high praise, indeed, considering the trailer promises Bollywood hunks John Abraham and Akshay Kumar in various states of undress. David “Bikini Girl No. 1” Dhawan’s son Rohit has delivered a debut film that is surprisingly grown-up in its comedy and its themes. Sexy, saucy, frequently ridiculous, and with a heart as big as John’s pecs, Desi Boyz is a damn good time.

Saturday Gossip!

Today in gossip - a couple of thoughtful pieces on nostalgia and watching Bollywood films and a couple of pretty cool looking film trailers from South! And Bebo getting voted the NUMBER ONE SEXIEST LADY! (We can't forget that!)

The song for Soup Boys! UPDATED 11/24

One of the coolest things about the "Kolaveri Di" phenomenon is the spate of homemade videos to go with it! It's the reverse of the Sallu Craze!

Here are a few that I've found... if you find any good ones, be sure to post the link in the comment section!

These guys made their own picturization!!

Tuesday Gossip!

First of all, I was going to start some dramz but decided it wasn't worth it. Let's just say that, yes, I noticed the snarking at my expense but I stand by what I said on fetishization. Maybe I will write that post on it... I bet there are lots of academic articles to reference on the same phenomenon in anime fans or what have you.

Also in the works is my review of Breaking Dawn (which was ♥) and hopefully I'll be able to make it through a couple of DVDs this long weekend. I've had a busy month or two with not much time for film viewing, unfortunately.

Oh! And be sure to check out the trailer for Chittagong
which is the film based on the same incident as the floptastic Ashutosh Gowarikar-Abhishek-Deepika film but starring real actors! It looks promising!

So, today in gossip - lots of odds and ends! Sunny Leone, Mughda Godse, Sonu Sood, Akshay Kumar... and Salman Khan!

Lootera is going to be a period film by Vikram Motwani (Udaan.)  So, on the one hand I'm excited because it's Sonakshi and Ranveer and they look amazing together but on the other hand, Udaan was awful.

So, the only comment I've gotten on the piece I posted yesterday is somebody butthurt that I called Ra.One a flop.

Can we just all agree that while Ra.One did make quite a bit of money, it also lost money for a lot of people and, most importantly, the overriding narrative in the media is that the film is a flop. So, I'm calling it a flop, which puts it in the same boat as films I liked - Tees Maar Khan and Mangal Pandey, which made money for some people but are considered flops.

Okay, guys? I'm really not picking on the film or SRK. If you read the piece, I even say that the film was a success in reaching non-traditional audiences. Please stop trying to argue with me about box office numbers because nobody wins that game.

NOW!!! Almost 100% of gossip coverage today was about Aishwarya and her new daughter so I had to dig pretty deep but I think you'll enjoy reading today's stories...

On Making It In America: Two Case Studies...

Mera Joota Hai Japani
Yeh Patloon Englishtani
Sar Pe Laal Topi Roosi
Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani

My shoes are Japanese
These trousers are English
The red hat on my head is Russian
But my heart remains Indian.

- “Mera Joota Hai Japani” from Sree 420

The last few weeks have seen a lot of discussion around my parts of the Internet on one particular topic - Ra.One.* From the mega-hype that preceded the film release to harshly divided opinion on the film itself to the shape of Shahrukh Khan’s career, there hasn’t been another film this year that has drawn so much fascinating conversation. Though I overdosed on the hype-explosion and couldn’t bring myself to actually see the film, I have been eagerly devouring all discussion on what the film means in a broader context for Bollywood.

Watch out, ladies!! Here come some Ricky Bahl promo pics!!!

One film I'm really looking forward to in the next couple of months, is Ladies Vs Ricky Bahl which appears to combine three of my favorite things - Ranveer Singh, Anushka Sharma, and a con artist who is conned by his own heart.

Does it get better than this? No.

MORE PICTURES UNDERE HERE!

Top story today... IT'S A GIRL!!!!!

Congratulations to Aishwarya, Abhishek, and their families!

Can anything else top that today? NOPE! (But I posted things, anyways...)

Making of Desi Boyz TITLE TRACK

Important Desi Boyz update....

... this video was A LOT of fun! I like that Rohit Dhawan is kind of dweeby looking... and his story about him narrating the initial film idea to Akshay over the phone is hilarious.

ALSO!! Don't miss Akshay's "sexy" pose while biting his... cricket bat. Too funny! What a ham!

Tuesday Gossip!

Aishwarya enters the hospital; Ranbir Kapoor talks Rockstar; Sonu Sood is OUT of Dabangg 2; and without seeing the film, I suspect Nargis's character in Rockstar was a Manic Pixie Dream Girl. (Please tell me I'm wrong...)

Namitha's new film opening...

I thought this was an interesting little video for those of us who are not Indian - it catches the ceremony that takes place before the first shot of a film!

Also, it has Namitha in it, which I always approve of.

Monday Gossip

Hi, everybody!!! Did you miss me?!

I had a fantastic time in Boston, catching up with old friends and really digging into things at the Futures of Entertainment Conference. I think I bought out the MIT bookstore... or at least that's what my suitcase felt like on the way back!

Unfortunately, I didn't have a chance to see Rockstar but word of mouth seems to reinforce what the trailer showed - everything was great except Nargis, who kind of blows... even if she's very pretty.

NOW! Enjoy your daily dose of compiled news!! Today we some important updates on VIDYUT JAMWAL among other things...

Krishnanum Radhayum: The big Diwali hit?

A big thank you to one of my favorite commenters, OG, for dropping this in my mail box today:

Hey FG,

Did you read about the latest "Superstar" in Kerala?

A man called Santosh Pandit has just released a film called Krishnanum Radheyum in Kerala with no prior experience and made with a paltry budget of 5 lakhs.

While all other producers decided to hold back their films for Diwali, this man released his film in 3 theatres in Cochin.

The film is spectacularly bad that it is awesome.... and it has been running houseful ever since. People are queuing up to see how bad the film is........

Watch out LADIES - it's Ricky Bahl!

Oh my GOD! This looks like a lot of fun! Ranveer Singh is sooo charming.

(I would totally fall for that act.)

Sonakshi Sinha on M

I don't understand how stylists continually fail to capitalize on Sonakshi Sinha's beauty. What on Earth is going on here? It looks like she's in a 1970s log cabin porn shoot waiting for her beau to unfurl the bear skin rug.

Mujhse Fraaandship Karoge: A Breath of Fresh Air!

All hail our Google overlords for getting into the business of streaming current Indian films!

Needing an antidote to the overly-hyped, overly-picked apart, and now swiftly deflating Diwali film season of 2011, I decided to see if there was anything tempting available in Youtube’s new rental storefront. There was - Mujhse Fraaandship Karoge, a small budget, small scale, under-publicized college rom-com that released to moderately positive reviews in October. Mujhse Fraaandship Karoge is the second release from Yash Raj Films’ new Y-Films division, whose tagline “Rock the Youth” spells out both their target demographic and their stylistic sensibilities.

[We can define “rock” as meaning “not filmi” and “youth” meaning “our college-going characters are played by actors who could actually be college students, not by 40+ year old Heroes.”]

New song trailer for Ladies VS Ricky Bahl!

This deserved its own post! I'm really looking forward to this movie... Anushka looks just smashing!

JOHN AND AKSHAY HAVE A DANCE OFF!

Forget product tie-ins and carpet bombing television chat shows. THIS is how you promote a film to Filmi Girl - by having your lead actors in dance off for my amusement.

WHO ARE YOU GOING TO VOTE FOR?! (Hint: The correct answer is Akshay.)

Two Hindi films releasing today are the Suniel Shetty-Govinda-Javed Jaffrey-Mimoh couldn't they have just gotten his father instead Chakraborty starrer Loot and the one with the kid who can't act but has a politician father and always-for-hire (but I love her anyways) Kangana Ranaut.

Yeah. Thankfully, neither are headed towards me and I'll hopefully get a chance to see Velayutham instead.

Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic: Bahut Suckage

In Hollywood, there is process known as “test screening,” in which a film studio shows an unfinished film to a series of audiences and makes changes to the film based on audience reactions. While the studio’s goal is to craft a film that is exactly what the viewing audience would like to see, the actual results are more varied. Cutting an emotionally charged reprise of Somewhere Over the Rainbow in The Wizard of Oz certainly didn’t affect the film’s box office gross or status as a beloved children’s film - although it certainly would have added more pathos to the film - but for every positive or neutral tweak made courtesy of a test screening, there is a film like 28 Days Later or Blade Runner which gets a disconcertingly happy ending tacked on to an otherwise bleak film because (surprise) bleak endings test negatively. Of course nobody likes to feel bad but there is a catharsis in the emotion that delivers a longer lasting satisfaction than a slap-dash happy ending - which is not to bash happy endings but to illustrate that giving audiences what they think they want is not always a good idea.

Wednesday Gossip!

Today! Two interesting takes on The Film.

Let me preface this by saying that I'm in no way "bashing" this movie. Am I going around saying it's terrible and nobody should see it? No. Does Salman rule and SRK drool? Perhaps, but we all have our own opinions on the matter and mine is no more valid than anybody else's.

In short, enjoying discussion about a film and what it means doesn't equal "bashing" and just because I haven't seen the film doesn't mean I can't have an opinion on the issues it raises. When filmmakers go to the trouble of trumpeting their movie as a "game changer for Hindi film" then I think it is fair game to discuss it - you can't take back that claim afterwards with "but it was just an entertaininer so don't analyze it."

Anyways - the two pieces:

The first is from blogger Dolce and Namak who picks up on something I noticed, too, in 7aum Arivu - that the addition of superpowers makes the "human" hero weak, which goes against the grain of traditional masala. I was reminded a bit of the scene in Love Story 2050 where Harman Baweja uses parkour to escape of gang of Australian punks instead of just dishooming them like a normal hero would. It was incredibly frustrating to watch because it felt so wrong to see him running from the rowdies. Sure, it's not "realistic" for a hero to be able to punch a billion guys into smithereens but it's part of the masala trope. One of the things I liked about K.V. Anand's Ko was that Jeeva - though fairly naturalistic in many other ways - still dishoomed the HECK out of some bad guys. *crack* *pow* *zap*

The second piece is from Satyamshot
who talks about what it means to be "keeping up" with Hollywood and following his logic, it does make sense that most of the really glowing reviews have come from Western critics, who perhaps recognize something in the storytelling.

Anyways, today in gossip - casting news, rock purists, and Salman Khan loves... *guess who*

7aum Arivu: From Chennai (Chowk) to China

I’ve been having a few on-going discussions with various people about what goes into a good film. Can a film be good if it has a flawed story? (And what makes a good story, anyways?) Cinema is essentially an experiential medium - visuals, audio, editing, and acting all add their parts to making a film good or bad. On top of that, the shared experience of watching a film as part of an audience adds something to a film. Reading a written screenplay is a very different experience from seeing a film in a packed movie theater. I’m of the opinion that story is only one part of making a good film - so if the direction, cinematography, music, acting, and feel of a film are good, I do think it can make up for a flawed script.

I thought about all of these things again while driving home from the theater after watching 7aum Arivu because - though it does have an imperfect narrative - I think it's a good film.

Oops! No News Post Today...

"Somebody" (i.e. me) stayed out too late last night and is too tired to crawl through the tabloids for your amusement. (Not that there is much out there anyway.) Instead, please enjoy the making of "Ringa Ringa" - the utterly delightful hero introduction song from 7aum Arivu

Friday Gossip!

The coverage of a That.One.Film is still dominating the media landscape but it has taken a bit of an interesting turn. Since I've been laid up with a cold for the past couple of days, I've had plenty of time to haunt the comments thread over at the Satyamshot Open Post and posters there have had a lot of insight into the box office numbers games and after looking at all the numbers from all the sources, the consensus seems to be that the 25 crores on the second day number is inflated.

It seems to me - and many others - that Shahrukh feels like a hit or even a superhit is not enough; he wants to smash box office records. While That. One is set to make bank, it's not set to break the record of 3 Idiots or even Bodyguard. That doesn't stop certain segments of the media from twisting around themselves to make it appear that the film is breaking records - even though it's not. If only Shahrukh hadn't set up the media narrative to be THE FILM IS GOING TO SMASH EVERY RECORD EVER, this level of success would seem like, you know, success.

One does have a small sliver of sympathy for Shahrukh if he is unable to enjoy his success just because it's not the best success... Shahrukh hasn't really been King Khan of the Box Office since Om Shanti Om and it doesn't look like the film is the one to re-crown him.

As far as reviews go, the American media has been mostly very kind, although the cynic in me can't help but wonder if they've been so dazzled by filmi magic that they are really reviewing "Bollywood conventions" and not the film. For example:

If you’re bored by the action scenes or the love story or the dopey domestic comedy, just wait three minutes for something else to come along — and whoever you are, you won’t be bored by the musical numbers!

I'm sure this is true of the film but it's also true of almost every hardcore commercial film coming out of India.

On the flip side, the handful of negative reviews of the film coming from American media do the same thing in reverse.

Much more interesting to me was this piece on some of the nastier undertones to the film.

This film is made for a pan Indian audience. How many kids in India can afford these kinds of games? How many Indian kids can relate to gaming heroes? And why is it that being a ‘dood’ is supposed to be ‘cool’ for Indian kids? Why can’t Indian kids be cool eating with their fingers? Also why do they have to look and dress in such a way that they can ‘pass’ for a white American kid? The kid’s deepest concern is that his father is not cool. His dad eats with his fingers and says ‘dude’ instead of ‘dood’. The kid is a gaming junkie with attitude. He doesn’t like fat kids and does nasty things to them, but we are supposed to like this kid. The disturbing thing is that kids in the audience do like him.

And this piece from Samit Basu who lays out the details of what went wrong with the story.

What does our supervillain, R***, want?

World domination?

Nuclear warfare?

The destruction of Facebook?

No, he wants to kill a small boy who was kicking him around in his videogame.

Granted the small boy was extremely annoying, and R*** had my sympathy for most of his few appearances, but you know what? This is not the kind of earth-shaking conflict situation you base a superhero movie on, unless it's a flat-out comedy or parody.

Okay - so for the news that doesn't involve Shahrukh Khan...

Thursday gosssssip!

Good morning, everyone! I'm actually a bit under the weather at the moment and have a nasty cold, but I hope everybody who was celebrating had a wonderful Diwali!

I know that one or two people will be disappointed at this but... I decided for my health and sanity (and after reading almost every review out there, positive AND negative) that I probably shouldn't see that movie that everybody is talking about, even to satisfy my curiosity. To be fair, some of the negative reviews are picking on things that don't usually bother me - inclusion of songs, broad comedy, and massive plot holes. But both positive and negative reviews mention one thing - Shahrukh's manic energy, which is something I find really unpalatable. I like Akshay Kumar enough to give him a pass for a joke about "over enthusiastic" air port security screening in Kambakkht Ishq but I know that the same kind of joke by Shahrukh would infuriate me. It's not "fair" but personal taste is never "fair."

So, knowing that I found Shahrukh's sentimental/comedy act in Kal Ho Naa Ho extremely off-putting and his cool-dude/nerd act in Rab Ne Bana De Jodi so annoying that I turned off the movie an hour in and felt no desire to finish it, it's safe to say that if Shahrukh's manic energy is the glue that holds This Movie together, then it will not be to my taste.

BUT, it seems that if you DO enjoy Shahrukh's act then this is a hugely entertaining film... even if it is not really The Future Of Hindi Cinema, but nobody was really expecting that from Anubhav Sinha anyways.

Fair enough, Shahrukh Fans?

On to gossip - not much happening but a few new trailers!!!

From the Vaults: De Taali - Clap your hands!

I have quite a few flaws but holding a grudge isn't one them. So, for my new Internet buddy Abbas Tyrewala, here is a review I wrote back in February 2009 of a film he had a hand in - De Taali. I remember really enjoying this but I haven't seen it since then... perhaps I'll add it to my Riteish Deshmukh sub-series of Box Office Poison. (Poor guy, apparently he doesn't work as a solo hero for anybody but me. Aftab Shivdasani, on the other hand, I most gladly banish to the land of Third-String Hero in Abhishek Bachchan Films along with Zayed Khan and Neil Nitin Mukesh.

I hope AT appreciates this because it's so embarrassing reading how terrible my writing was back then!

See, kids! When you blog consistently and frequently, your prose improves mightily!

Tuesday Gossip!

Today in gossip - Shiney Ahuja fights in vain against his new public image as a total pervert; Aamir Khan seems set to do Jacki Shroff a big favor; Vishal Bhardwaj and Rakesh Roshan scrape the bottom of the barrel, and, hmm... something else that has slipped my mind. Isn't there a big film releasing tomorrow? Gosh, too bad there has been no press about it... now what was that title...

ETA: I have been (very rightly) been scolded into pointing out that Sayali is also accusing Amitabh Bachchan, Sajid Khan, and Arya Babbar of sexual harassment AND that I'm not ragging on Beth for her Tell Me O Kkhuda post. I genuinely thought it was cute that she is looking forward to it and in no way do I think she is getting paid by the Deol family to write the preview. Even I get accused of that from time to time and it's frustrating.

Everybody happy!?

Ko: I Turn My Camera On

"Sorry, but I am not optimistic at all. I think we are f*****. There's no dearth of writers in India, but there's a great lack of writing that has the life and smell of this nation.”

Abbas Tyrewala at the Mumbai Film Festival, 2011

It’s become very clear to me that Abbas Tyrewala and I must not watching the same films. While he has been quoted (more than once) bemoaning the state of screenwriting in India, I have been watching a steady flow of smart, well-written films from all over India - e.g. Shor in the City (Hindi), Naan Kadavul (Tamil), Maanasare (Kannada), and Urumi (Malayalam). Perhaps Abbas got his copy of Game stuck in his DVD player and can’t get it out - that film on a loop would surely make anybody feel fucked.*

So, I couldn’t help shaking my head at Abbas (once again) as I watched the highly entertaining Tamil film Ko this weekend. Smartly written by K.V. Anand (who also wrote and directed Ayan) with a sharp eye towards the the intertwined nature of the media and politics, Ko amuses, delights, charms, and, most importantly, makes you think.

(I will not be going into spoilers for the plot in this review. If you do plan on seeing the film, please do yourself a favor and stay away from the wikipedia entry because you will want to see this film with fresh eyes.)

Thursday Gossip!

Today in gossip - assorted nonsense in which I'm annoyed at Ra.1 promotions (STILL! YES, I KNOW! I CANNOT WAIT FOR THIS FILM TO GO AWAY!) and excited for Saif Ali Khan's coronation!

And just a small note - I had somebody accuse me on Twitter last night of shoving my (uniformed) opinion down their throat. Do you know what the solution to that is? Don't follow me on Twitter and my opinion will not show up in your timeline. Done. Finito.

Do you know what is not helpful? Haranguing me with your opinion and refusing to drop the argument when I clearly have stated "let's agree to disagree."

Sigh. How I wish I could "unfollow" all the Ra.1 promotions... sadly, the Internet does not have such fancy filters.

Note from Filmi Girl:

I love Bollywood - and all the ridiculous things that happen in Bollywood - but it doesn't mean that I can't occasionally make fun of various celebrities and films.
